What’s the best or most fulfilling part of teaching Mandarin Chinese for you?

The joy of witnessing students experience those "aha" moments, where they grasp a concept or gain insight into a culture, is indeed one of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching. Seeing their eyes light up with understanding and enthusiasm can be incredibly rewarding for educators. Additionally, knowing that students are applying the knowledge they've gained from you in real-life situations further reinforces the impact of your teaching efforts. It's gratifying to see your students not only learn but also utilize what they've learned to navigate and engage with the world around them.

What role have languages played in your life outside of the classroom?

Languages have played a significant role in my life outside of the classroom. They serve as a tool for connecting with my family, allowing me to communicate with relatives who speak different languages and fostering stronger bonds with them. Moreover, languages have enabled me to gain insights into diverse perspectives from around the world. Through engaging with speakers of other languages, I've been able to understand different cultural viewpoints and broaden my understanding of global issues.

Overall, languages have been instrumental in facilitating meaningful connections and expanding my worldview beyond the confines of my own cultural and linguistic background.

What has been your favorite memory using (or teaching) a language so far?

One of my favorite memories involving language is when I'm walking outside and suddenly hear students calling out "Liu laoshi" (meaning teacher in Chinese). It's a heartwarming moment that makes me feel deeply connected to the community and honored to be remembered by my students. This recognition reaffirms the impact of teaching and the bonds formed between educators and students. It's a reminder of the meaningful relationships that language education can foster and the lasting impressions we can leave on those we teach.

What advice or encouragement would you like to share with aspiring or early-career language educators?

For aspiring or early-career language educators, remember that while the beginning may be tough, the rewards are worth it. By staying focused on the rewards of teaching and nurturing your own growth, you can find fulfillment and success in your career as a language educator.
