Erduan: English Teacher in Taiwan
Educators are sharing the importance of language teaching!
Meet Ed—an English teacher at the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University (HSNU) - 師大附中
My bilingual background continues to drive my commitment to helping students unlock their potential and embrace the diverse, interconnected world we live in.
What first inspired you to become a language educator? What motivates you today?
Growing up bilingual, I experienced firsthand the immense power and opportunities that come with understanding multiple languages. This exposure ignited my passion for education, as I realized that being able to communicate across cultures not only broadens one's horizons but also fosters empathy and deeper connections between people. Today, what motivates me as an educator is witnessing the impact that learning can have on students' lives. Seeing them overcome challenges, grow in confidence, and achieve their goals reminds me daily of the importance of my role in their journey.
What advice or encouragement would you like to share with aspiring or early-career language educators?
My advice to aspiring or early-career language educators is to embrace curiosity and continuous learning.
Cultivate a deep passion for the language you teach, and never stop exploring its nuances, cultural context, and evolving trends. Be patient with yourself and your students, celebrate their progress, and always strive to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to succeed. Remember, the impact you have as a language educator extends far beyond the classroom, shaping the way individuals perceive and engage with the world around them.
What is the best or most fulfilling part of teaching language for you?
The most fulfilling part of teaching is witnessing students' moments of realization and growth, as they grasp new concepts and develop a deeper understanding of the subject. Knowing that I've played a role in their educational journey and personal development brings me immense satisfaction and joy.
What role has language played in your life outside the classroom?
Languages have played a pivotal role in my life outside of the classroom by enhancing my ability
to connect with diverse cultures and people. They have opened up opportunities for travel,
enriched my understanding of global perspectives, and allowed me to build meaningful
relationships across different communities.
Have you got a favorite word or expression in another language? What is it, what does it mean, and why did you choose it?
My favorite phrase in another language is in Mandarin: 加油 (jiā yóu), which means 'keep going.' This reminds me to always keep fighting, no matter how harsh the conditions are.
Complete the though: Teaching a language means...
Teaching a language means nurturing not just linguistic skills, but also fostering a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and empathy. It's about guiding students on a journey of discovery, where they not only learn vocabulary and grammar but also gain insight into the customs, traditions, and perspectives of different communities.
Language teaching goes beyond communication; it empowers individuals to bridge divides, forge connections, and navigate the complexities of our interconnected world with sensitivity and understanding.
