The Opportunity
Language education is the foundation for building a more connected, competitive, and compassionate world. As global challenges—from public health to climate change to diplomacy—demand cross-cultural collaboration, the ability to communicate across languages is no longer optional. It’s essential.
Today’s students must be prepared to live, work, and lead in a multilingual, multicultural society. But access to high-quality language learning remains inequitable. Many school districts, particularly those serving under-resourced communities, lack the funding, certified educators, and support systems to offer strong language programs. Without action, we risk leaving behind a generation of young people who deserve to participate fully in the global economy and society.
Why It Matters
- Workforce Development: 90% of U.S. employers rely on employees with language skills, yet 1 in 3 report missing out on business opportunities due to a lack of multilingual talent.1
- National Security: The U.S. Department of Defense and intelligence agencies have identified language skills as essential for military readiness and international security.2
- Academic Success: Language learners outperform peers on standardized tests, develop stronger cognitive skills, and are more likely to graduate high school to either attend college or pursue technical careers.
- Equity & Representation: Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) remain vastly underrepresented among language educators.3 Investing in language education helps diversify the teaching profession and uplifts communities historically excluded from global opportunities.
- Global Understanding: Language learners gain empathy, cultural awareness, and the tools to combat xenophobia and bias—skills urgently needed in a divided world.
The Solution
We must expand access to language education for all students and invest in the educators who make it possible. This includes:
- Funding professional development for current and future teachers, particularly from historically underrepresented groups.
- Supporting curriculum innovation to reflect diverse cultures, voices, and perspectives.
- Raising public awareness about the lifelong benefits of multilingualism.
- Connecting language learning to careers, showing students how their skills apply in fields like business, health care, national security, technology, and the arts.
Your Support Makes it Possible
Through generous charitable gifts to the LCF, ACTFL can train and support more teachers, create resources for classrooms nationwide, and ensure that language education is not a privilege, but a right.
Together, we can build a future where every student has the opportunity to become a confident, culturally competent, and globally engaged citizen.
